Jim Reitenbach, Superintendent

Jim Reitenbach is in his 12th year as Superintendent for the Avon Local Schools. Jim has served the field of education in a variety of positions. His resume includes thirty seven years in education as a Social Studies teacher, Department Chairman, Head Men's Basketball Coach, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Personnel Director prior to his appointment as Superintendent.

His education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies, from John Carroll University; a Masters in Educational Administration from Cleveland State University; and thirty-six hours of post Masters work, thirty hours from Akron University and six from Ashland University.

As Jim enters his 12th year he is excited about the direction of the district and the many initiatives to improve the district. Among the many initiatives the most noteworthy are:

  1. Setting a vision for where the district needed to go through a strategic development plan instituted during the 2000 - 01 school year; and subsequent revisions, with the most recent being this past school year;
  2. Expanding and improving professional development for teachers to include differentiated instruction and an emphasis on using a variety of techniques;
  3. The mapping and alignment of all subjects to meet the state standards;
  4. Integrating the strands of the Ohio Graduation & Achievement exams into the curriculum;
  5. The integration of technology into the curriculum;
  6. Increasing communication between teachers and parents through the use of e-mail and the web site;
  7. Improving the business operations of the school district;
  8. Improving the physical environment of the buildings and grounds;
  9. The designing and construction of two new elementary buildings (Heritage North and South Elementary Schools);
  10. The designing and construction of an addition to Avon East Elementary School & Avon High School;
  11. The addition of two new softball fields, a soccer field, 5 tennis courts, and the renovation of the varsity baseball field.;
  12. The renovation of the varsity football/soccer stadium with new home and away bleachers, new lights, press box, concession stand, track and field turf;
  13. The designing and construction of classrooms connecting Heritage South and Heritage North Elementary schools; and,
  14. The construction of a new transportation facility and the moving of the Transportation Dept from the Middle School to the Heritage North Campus.

He believes that progress can occur as long as everyone is focused on the direction that the district is going and works together to accomplish the goal of the district. The goal is to improve the academic achievement for all of our students. The standardized test scores indicate how well the system is working and that the quality of education continues to improve. As a result of the scores, we are extremely pleased to be rated "Excellent" for the tenth year in a row.  As Jim has stated repeatedly, "We are a good school district, but we must continually strive to improve."
